A climate phenomenon known as the positive Indian Ocean Dipole (pIOD) leads to drier than normal weather in Australia and Indonesia and to wetter than normal weather in East Africa. According to climate models, global warming will cause pIOD events to increase in frequency and severity. Thats alarming. The last big pIOD event, in 1997, caused floods in Somalia, Kenya and other African countries along with wildfires and drought in Australia and Indonesia.
