A close friend was recently officially remonstrated against at work, for using the term folks. The person lodging the complaint said that folks was racist. Gee, I dont get it. Did the First Amendment get repealed while I was napping this afternoon? I mean, there are a whole lot of tenuous, no, down right tortured, misapplications of logic being applied in this case. Without debating about whether folks is inherently racist, let me just grant for the sake of argument that it is. The First Amendment was thought necessary to cover POPULAR speech. It was passed to cover UNPOPULAR speech. There IS a popular misconception that by use of accusation a person can 1) decree any word to be racist, and 2) ban the speech act involved and 3) bring the wrath of God down on the speaker. I strongly urge everyone to read The Shadow University (NY Times), research it under Water Buffalo. There are actually real people losing their freedom of speech under some strange version of political correctness. I dont mean in 1984 (actually, we were probably freer then than now), I am talking about now, today, in the US of A. The terrible irony of this situation is that this is happening at the same time we celebrate the sacrifices made 60 years ago to defend free speech. Have I offended any of you water buffalos? Well, folks, too bad.
