A co-worker stunned me yesterday with the fact that my state—the progressive, forward-thinking Arizona, home to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Governor Jan Brewer, SB1070, and John McCain—offers no workplace protections for being gay or transgender. I don’t know how that escaped my notice, but I decided to check into it. It turns out there are 29 states for which there are no workplace protections for LGBT persons. Further investigation provides important mitigating details: many cities and companies have laws or pledges against discrimination, and all public workers are protected (see the Politifact link below). Well, that’s good. But if this is news to you too and you are affected by it, take note that at least some of these protections don’t mean much in practical terms: the City of Phoenix recently enacted a law of protection for LGBT workers. The maximum penalty? A $2,500 fine--*if* it goes to court; mediation is the first line of enforcement. Got time?
