A comment I just made on a posting by someone that I want to share with my friends about the growing movement to attack the Chinese dog exploitation: I understand that these images are upsetting and traumatic to look at. I feel the same way. However, we have to do our work here at home before we point our bloody fingers at poor countries half way around the world. North America is killing and eating many animals and has been doing so for at longer and in greater numbers than china or other Asian countries. Our hands are still blood soaked. We need your passion and dedication here to engage and demand an end to our holocaust on our non-human neighbours. When we make statements about dogs being eaten in china while we eat cows, pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, fish, duck, goose, buffalo, bear, moose, deer, rabbit...you name it, all we do is make this a speciesist issue and because we are targeting a foreign country...a racist one. If the death of any sentient being is equal to that of another sentient being and the hand of an American holding a knife is equal to that of a Chinese holding a knife...why does it become important what country or animal it is? Lets stay focused at home and do our work of cleaning our own hands of blood and not fall prey to the slippery slope that is racism and speciesism. We are still learning of the intersectionality of oppression and we must not fall for it. The other aspect of danger is the blanket statement all those people is not fair. There are many people in china (a communist state where freedom of speech is oppressed) who are working tirelessly to help animals there. Animal rights just as human rights is an underground movement in china. Just because you dont hear of their efforts doesnt mean things are not being done there to help animals. People risk their lives in china to stand up for anything, please do not diminish their resolve or efforts by saying all Chinese people are cruel. Americans are not all blood thirty cowboys either. If you want to help Chinese fight for animal rights, help fight for their civil and human rights so they can speak up and be public about it! The most we risk when we choose to hold signs and use a megaphone is chastising from animal abusers. Chinese activists risk their freedom and possibly their lives. They risk much more and they have greater courage than westerners. We can hardly get people to come out and hold a sign on a sidewalk. Please! Stop the racism and speciesism. Help here at home.
