A commercial on television recently has an older woman proclaiming the (Federal) government is not set-up to take care of us, that they cannot do it, no way. You may have seen this commercial. Well, I would like to ask what all these other departments have been doing for decades? Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, FEMA, NOAA, Health and Human Services (HHS), Dept. of Energy (DoE), Dept. of Commerce (DoC), Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS), Transportation Safety Admin. (TSA), Nuclear Reg. Commission (NRC), Food and Drug Admin. (FDA), Drug. Enforc. Admin. (DEA), FAA, FCC, NWS (National Weather Service), etc. Sure, it may be true these departments cost billions of dollars and could always be run more efficiently, but it is honestly possible to say this about any organization - even private businesses! Every business of business-like organizations needs a template to manage itself by, and once this is done the next key component is the dedication and enthusiasm of the people who staff it. If services are costing too much money in the peoples opinion, then this simply means we need to look at how they do business and where the money is being spent. It does not mean we need to close a department completely and re-engineer it from the ground up. At this point in time we have reached a cross-roads one where private insurance carriers are not doing the job for a segment of the population and neither was the government (prior to October 1st). Get it?? There are millions of people with legitimate medical needs who were not represented in the existing government-supporting-the-people infrastructure. They are or were paying taxes, they are or were voting, and they are or were (likely) in contact with various elected representatives or agencies AND they were not receiving ANY routine medical care at all. Unless they had a serious medical emergency and went in to an Emergency Room and got the minimal level of treatment necessary to resolve their issue or temporarily alleviate it - AND THEN THE REST OF SOCIETY WAS PAYING FOR THOSE SERVICES ANYWAY! Hello?!? So rather than the recently legislation being called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, maybe it should have been called, Stop People From Sponging Off the System and Driving Everybody Elses Costs Up Act (SPFSO-SDEECUP). The only other government department I believe I have lived through the creation of is the Department of Homeland Security. Does anyone know what their annual budget is or how many Republicans or Democrats favored its creation or existence? What is the point in disagreeing with each other so strongly on PPACA and arguing over the costs that are only ESTIMATES so far? dhs.gov/dhs-budget (Budget est. for 2014 at $180,000,000.00) So, I have to ask is there any chance at all that Healthcare.gov *might* be built with new attitudes, new ideas, new processes and people who are dedicated and enthusiastic about seeing it succeed? After all this attention, it will undoubtedly be the most scrutinized and analyzed institution created FOR THE PEOPLE in the history of America.
