A communal clash in Ukhuorumi, in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, has reportedly claimed an unspecified number of lives in the area. Some residents, however, told the News Agency of Nigeria that about 10 lives were lost during the crisis. But the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Eguavoen, who confirmed the clash, said only two lives were lost. Speaking on the telephone, the police spokesman who said no arrest had been made, added that normalcy had been restored to the area. He said, For now, two persons were reported dead while those injured are receiving treatment at the hospital. Normalcy has been restored to the area and investigation has since commenced and the perpetrators will be brought to book, but for now no arrest has been made. Also confirming the unrest, the Public Relations Officer, 4 Brigade, Benin, Capt. Roselyn Managbe, said several cars were damaged. She also said no arrest had been made. She said, The officer in-charge said vehicles were burnt and that it was only a problem between the community chairman and his vice. I cant say if it is the local government or a community; they showed me pictures of burnt cars. The Army only went there to restore normalcy. No arrest has been made, we didnt even see anybody. We arrived after the damaged has been done. We are on ground to forestall any further crisis and to bring peace back to the community. Eyewitnesses accounts said a leadership tussle between members of Ukhorumi Community Development Association loyal to the chairman and supporters of his deputy, led to the clash. The community, according to sources, had been deserted, while several buildings were burnt.
