A copy of the email I sent to minister Alan Kelly. Hi - TopicsExpress

A copy of the email I sent to minister Alan Kelly. Hi alan, My name is orla helly. I am enquiring why as minister you have decided not to look at putting a cap on the rent private landlords can ask for? I think you need to explain in detail why you have made this decision. At present there are two familys per day in dublin city going homeless, this is because landlords have put up rent for personal gain & these familys can not pay the top ups. I dont understand why you cannot make decisions to resolve these problems, instead I feel you are creating problems by ignoring these issues. An example of this a lady who I recently spoke to who has two young children & is in receipt of rent supplement. Her landlord gave her 28days notice that he was increasing her rent of €200 per month, as she knew she could not afford the massive increase she started to look for a new property to rent. The lady viewed 37 properties with in a two & a week period not finding one that she could afford. Her 28 day notice is up on July 31st leaving her & her two little girls homeless. What I would like you to explain to me is why you feel that there is no need to cap rents. The homeless department have started using hotels to home familys as they have nowhere to put theses people. Even at a discount these hotels would cost €50 per room per night, that is €350 per week & €1,400 per month. This lady has €975 on rent allowance. it is costing the government €425 extra per month to house this family in a hotel where she can not cook a meal to feed her children. Instead of giving the lady extra rent supplement or putting a cap on rents the government is wasting tax payers money to push familys homeless & have no consistency for children. The children are our countrys future & yous are distorting them forcing them to live in hostels & hotels. You your self would not stay in one of these places so how can you make decisions that force other to? I am a tax payer that receives no social welfare payments, I do not hold a medical card & i own my own home & have a high morgage. I am not asking any of the above for personal reasons or gain but only because I feel you & your fellow TDs are destroying our generation & the one coming quickly behind ours. I request that you personally reply back to me on all of the above issues I have addressed. People have put you into the position you have & you have a duty to explain the decisions you make. I will also be posting a copy of this email to the Facebook page North Dublin Bay Housing Crisis & my own page. Feel free to look at it there if you wish. I will be waiting for a reply. Kind regards Orla Helly.
