A council spokesperson says..... "I thought it best to provide you with a current assessment. 1. Basement: This is now empty bar a small number of loose items. 2. Ground floor: This space has been left in a poor state by the squatters. 3. First floor: All individual rooms/offices have been used by the squatters and are full of deleterious material. 4. Second floor: There is waste throughout . I am sure you do not require me to detail the nature and type of waste that needs to be removed. It should also be noted that the squatters had a number of dogs with them in the building. At the moment I am not able to confirm when this work will be completed as investigations on the types of waste and the required safe method of disposal are still being assessed, along with costs. Whilst we met all legal deadlines and acted within the law to remove the squatters it nevertheless remains frustrating that we could not legally do more to hasten the process of eviction. Listing – Outcome We have been informed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport that the application to list the Nettlefold Building has failed. Lease Agreement The draft lease agreement has now been exchanged between parties and is subject to a further round of negotiations over the next 2 weeks. We anticipate agreement being reached by the end of August 2013. Planning Application To enable the planning process City Screen require full access to the building to complete full costings, etc. This obviously cannot take place until after the building has been cleared. Books and stock on the premises The offer from the Friends of Group to assist Library Staff with the grading of books once the building has been cleaned is warmly welcomed. Library staff will be in contact to make arrangements, after all contamination has been removed. Next Steering Group A council Due to the summer holiday season I am proposing the next meeting of the steering group will be held in the first week of September 2013, date, time venue to be confirmed."
