A couple days late for Memorial Day, but heres a strong - TopicsExpress

A couple days late for Memorial Day, but heres a strong recommendation for an old documentary, available on DVD: the BBCs The World at War from 1973. Consensus at /r/AskHistorians was that its one of the most, if not *the* most, comprehensive overviews of World War II ever put to film, and its a magnificent piece of work. I was prompted to start looking for it by an experience on our trip last year. We were looking at a museum exhibit about the Soviet Unions wartime experience and Julie remarked that her history classes in Taiwan had barely covered the European side of the war at all, focusing almost entirely on what Japan was doing in China. (Ironically, the exhibit in question was at a museum in China!) So I figured when we got back, Id find a good documentary for us to watch together, and man, did I ever hit pay dirt with this one. One annoyance: the North American DVDs dont have subtitles, which makes some of the interviews pretty hard to follow for a non-native English speaker since some of the interviewees have thick accents. However, there are subtitle files for the entire series on subscene, so if you know how to use VLC or another player that can load .srt files, thats easy to take care of.
