A couple months ago, a brand new Inclusive Playground opened up 5 minutes from where we live. It is specifically designed so that children of all levels of ability and challenges can play together. I just received a group email below from a Special Needs Mom who was asking for opinions about how to handle difficult situations like this that come up. This is real. It happens every day. It hurt my heart but I dont have a clear, easy answer. I changed the childs name even though I dont know the family. The child is on the Autism spectrum. How could this mom have responded? (Keep the hate talk out please, Im hoping to share real solutions). Need feedback - during the past weekend, I had quite an experience when I took Jack to the playground and I am wondering what you would do in such a scenario. Recently, Jack has started having issues to keep hands to himself. I took him to the playground and finally decided to give myself time to talk with my friend who I bumped into at the playgound. Jack likely hit another kid, the father of the kid first complained to me, then he stood not far away from me, in the middle of the playground said it out loud What is wrong with that kid? I brushed it off.... A few minutes later, Jack ran to me and cried inconsolably and told me XX said the police is coming to get me and will put me in jail. It turned out to be the same family, the mom said it to Jack after Jack did something they didnt like. I know I will have to make sure Jack doesnt get off my radar at all moving forward..... What would you do when you encounter this scenario?
