A couple of friends who do not live in the UK have asked about my profile photo and what the Badger Cull is all about – I have attempted to sum things up as I see them ... There is a disease among cattle called Bovine Tuberculosis (BTB) - clue is in the name; it is a Bovine disease. Poor biosecurity and intensive farming methods mean that cows pass this disease among themselves rapidly, and, unfortunately, they also pass it to other animals that live in close proximity. British farmers have long held superstitions towards Badgers, for example, an old folk-lore claiming that they take milk from a cow ... Farmers claim that Badgers give this bovine disease to cows and are, therefore, responsible for the continued spread of the disease. Government Scientists estimate that at best, at best, a cull (slaughter) of Badgers might reduce the spread of the disease by a maximum of 16 or 17% - farmers wish to focus all of the efforts, and millions of pounds of tax payers money, into this maximum 17% reduction, rather than target the remaining 87% of disease spreading causes. In Britain at the moment, large farms are owned by a few wealthy people. These people often vote for the Tory party and they love hunting for sport. About 7 years ago, the Labour party banned hunting for sport, and a centuries old past-time became officially designated as cruel. The land owners and their thugish workers disliked not being able to hunt and have continued to flout the law. This is very hard to police, and so members of the public have formed private watch groups called sabs to monitor and film illicit hunt activity and have brought about successful prosecutions. They do this at great risk of personal harm, and both women and even teenage girls are violently attacked and assaulted by groups of men who sometimes appear out of the blue on quad bikes ... 217 years ago, a British man named Edward Jenner developed a medical procedure called vaccination, and the whole world has seen the eradication of disease by vaccination. Disease is Not eradicated by commuting genocide on other species of life form which may also carry the disease. To follow such a path of logic would mean that you murder your neighbours children in order to protect yours from catching the flu. There are currently 2 Badger cull (slaughter) trials taking place in England. By coincidence, both of these areas which have been chosen are also areas where game birds are bred for shooting. The Tory government have also attempted to introduce legislation to destroy the nests of birds of prey because the birds are competition for bird-shooters; the only animal allowed to kill another animal in Tory-owned nature is a human and the only animals allowed to exist are those from which a tangible financial profit can be extracted. The wealth of nature and indeed the biological practicality of maintaining biodiversity is lost to these short-sighted materialist bafoons. The current culls are Not supported by science. The current culls are not supported by all farmers either. Protesters and sabs have been walking around the cull zones at night in high-viz jackets, getting between the shooters guns and the Badgers to protect them. The culls have failed to slaughter the quantity of Badgers required and the government are now trying to introduce laws to gas them instead of shoot them. The British public are outraged about this slapdash approach to a Protected Species and I do all I can to inform people here on fb For further information, please take a look at these BBC News articles thank you so much for caring about our beloved wildlife
