A couple of people asked where the NWS gets their data from to determine CAPE, CIHN, and overall severe weather potential. One way is the skew-t, like shown below. Its a sounding of what is occurring in the atmosphere. The sounding shown below is an experimental product and there will be times where data collection will be degraded. This is a living document taken from the GOES-8/9 satellites and will change over time as additional soundings are taken about once an hour.
