A couple of years ago during a trip to Canada, I saw a couple of books on how the conservatives in that country would take over parliament. That was the movement that took Harper and the drugged mayor of Toronto to power. In the article below, the conservatives are making a similar pitch for the US. I do not disagree with them that the suburbs are a bad idea, and the fact that so many other countries around the world are choosing similar arrangements is really discouraging (think lawns instead of agricultural fields). But if the conservatives are ready to lead a charge to take cities, maybe it is the time for liberals to appeal to rural and suburban communities that for so long have been in the hands of conservative governments that have denied basic services to their constituencies in the name of lower property taxes. They have been able to do it by off setting opportunities of employment and services to urban economies, which have always been the engines of growth. It is about time for cities to stop subsidizing artificially low suburban taxes and for everyone to stop funding public infrastructures that cater to suburbia more than to urban centers. We do not highways to connect every single new development, we need trains to connect the cities. We do not need highways congested by suburban commuters, we need better public transportation systems to connect neighborhoods and allow for grown in more dense urban centers. theamericanconservative/urbs/the-conservative-case-against-the-suburbs/
