A couple weeks back my friend Sarah reached out with such a thoughtful & timely note. Sarah teaches 3rd grade & was curious if she could put a collection box out & ask her students if theyd consider donating PB & J to 10,000 PB&Js. Weve been operating in large part week to week via a private donor whos stretched themselves beyond their comfort zone for us and have minimal inventory so I was thrilled to say yes. When I picked up her students donations this past weekend I was relieved to discover how generous theyd been. Collectively they had contributed 110 jars of PB&J, enough to sustain our operations for just over 3 weeks given our current production volume. We had a bit of breathing room to carry us until our upcoming fundraiser in late January. (Invites out this week) For whatever reason I had mistakenly assumed Sarah taught in White Plains. When she told me she worked in the Bronx I decided Id do a little homework on her school. PS 61 is not unfamiliar with Americas Hunger Crisis. About 90% of the schools students currently qualify for free or reduced price breakfast & lunch. Many of her students know firsthand what it means to be hungry or food insecure on a daily basis. I encounter it often these days but continue to be blown away by peoples generosity. When I think about the hearts of these kids and their parents to give to strangers that theyll never meet knowing full well that so many of them live near or below the poverty line themselves, Im inspired in ways I cant properly articulate. Sarah & her 3rd graders have seen to it that roughly 1,500 sandwiches will find their way to NYCs hungry & #homeless in the coming weeks. Add these adorable kids to the long list of people Im grateful for in 2014. 10,000 PB&Js: #KINDNESS MADE SIMPLE. #10kPBJ #NYC #NYPD
