A day out with my friend esther Forrest Caught in a mini traffic jam Just before the entrance of the Los Medanos College in Antioch California Migratory ducks Regal Taking all the time in the world to cross the street Checked the other side for forage Nope Crossed back Patient drivers No honking Except for a sole driver Rushed to drive through the path of the birds Luckily the birds eluded the car Broke my heart So callous They remind me Of the migratory egrets Visiting the rice paddies Looking for food Just before sundown Flying back in fleet North bound Where to Perhaps to China or to taiwan Or to any neighboring Southeast asian countries How can you not respect the fortitude and resilience of these birds Part of the wonder of my childhood Just as surely as the coming of the siberian wind in october So are the birds when the fields turn green and gold.
