A defective lime given MONDAY AUGUST 05, 2013; KINGSTOWN, ST. VINCENT and the GRENADINES – On Saturday July 28 2013, officials of the Organising Committee of the 2013 Windward Islands Schools Games were left holding a lime, which they never expected to be defective. Since the hosting of the 2013 Inter-Secondary School Games of at the Anos Vale Cricket Grounds, and the successful live streaming, talks have been ongoing with officials of LIME SVG for the live streaming of various components of the events. An agreement was reached in principle, and all that was needed was for the 2013 Windward Islands Schools Games officials to provide LIME SVG with a letter outlining the various locations, and other pieces of pertinent information. That information was submitted to LIME SVG about two weeks before the 2013 Windward Islands Schools Games, and a signed letter was dispatched soon after. LIME SVG soon followed up informing 2013 Windward Islands Schools Games officials that the modems needed has been secured and the lines for the streaming of the Opening Ceremony from the West St. Georges Secondary School would be installed. However, on Saturday morning having received assurances that all was in place, when the 2013 Windward Islands Schools Games attempted to commences testing of the line, they were left with mouths open in shock! The download speed was 7.84 Mbps, and the upload speed was 0.73 Mbps. The only decision left was to cancel the live streaming, which also left other components of the media coverage undone. No one contacted the 2013 Windward Islands Schools Games officials on that faux pais. On Monday morning, an official of the 2013 Windward Islands Schools Games Organising Committee, went to LIME SVG offices to secure an explanation, and that all would be in place to stream the track and field competition later that day from the Anos Vale Cricket Ground. However when 2013 Windward Islands Schools Games officials went to the Media Centre at the Anos Vale Cricket Ground to commence preparation, they were again left holding a defective lime. At 1325 hours on Monday July 29, 2013, a speed test was carried out after concerns were raised over the absence of any internet connections. The download speed was 8.54 Mbps, and the download speed was 0.78 Mbps! The technicians were furious, as they were again give what one termed, “a six for a nine and that LIME took the cheapest way out.” Again not just the live streaming but also other important aspects of the media coverage had to be shelved because LIME SVG failed to provide what it promised. Persons in the region were asking questions as to why within a couple of days, the promised live streaming never materialized. To add insult to injury, LIME branding were at all of the venues, and all they gave was LIME packs with a water bottle, a rain poncho in a bag; more like reheated leftovers from Vinci Mas 2013. The most important aspect was never realized. The cost of those LIME packs vis-à-vis the value of live streaming and the facebook pages updates to the athletes cannot be overlooked, and the only excuse one LIME SVG official could have given me is: “I am truly sorry that this happen.” I spoke to him after encountering difficulties in securing an interview with either the Country Manager or the Head of Marketing on Monday. The LIME SVG official who I had spoken to a few weeks ago after neither LIME SVG Head of Marketing nor the secretary to the Country Manager returned messages, requesting an interview to do a follow-up story on a social programme, which LIME SVG is involved. He not being of the higher echelons in the company’s managerial strata, the LIME SVG official requested anonymity when approached on Monday evening. He said that there are the skilled technicians and programming at LIME to do what is needed. As to why a LIME SVG technician was not present to test the upload speed, and verify its workability is beyond his understanding, for that is not what is instill in them. “I know that we have been told to do all that we can to protect the integrity of the company by ensuring all installations are working before vacating the premises or sites, so someone will have to give an explanation on that,” the very apologetic LIME SVG official stated. “I am very sorry that there were no live streaming of the two events, and that you were unable to do the facebook updates. I do hope that management will find the time and whatever else it takes to apologise to the officials and you for the company’s failure.” (Robertson S.
