A difficult assignment away to Moone Celtic, leaders of Division 2, in the Div 1-2-3 Shield resulted in a highly entertaining game on Saturday evening with Newbridge Colts running out 4-2 winners. In a tight first half Malone failed to convert Colts’ best opportunity when he shot wide at the near post following an excellent first touch after a quarter of an hour. Moone won a penalty following some pressure and converted well from the spot to take the lead in the 35th minute and this is how it remained till half time. With Loftus playing a little deeper in the second half, the Div 1 side began to create and 14 minutes into the half, Thorpe side foot crossed for Dean O’Toole to power home a great header over the keeper. Steven Donegan was introduced immediately and he spurred Colts on to take the lead 6 minutes later. Malone laid off a pass to Donegan who had come in off the right flank and he whipped a left-footer beyond the keeper’s reach into the corner of the net from 25 yards. The third came again 6 minutes later. O’Brien gained possession and bombed on down the right wing. His cross was gathered by Malone in front of the near post and when he hooked the ball into the danger area, O’Toole arrived to score his second from close range. With the home side pushing to get back into the game, O’Toole cleared from in front of his own goal to Cormac Malone on the half-way line. When the striker got turned and beat the last defender, the fourth goal was inevitable. He slotted home to the keeper’s left for a well-deserved goal on his comeback. Moone responded with 5 minutes remaining with a fine header from a right wing cross but Colts were able to hold out aided by the introduction of Byrne and Howe.
