A dog is not an accessory. Just because you see a good deal on a fancy breed does not mean that you need to impulse buy. Yesterday, a woman on a local group posted a picture of a dog that she found. He is an English Bulldog and looks pure bred. He is sitting in the back seat of her car with his tongue hanging out. Its a good enough picture but nothing great. Awesome of her to pick up a stray and try to find his people. But what gets under my skin is the response. A few people claim it is their friends dog, or they know who he belongs to, etc. No OMG! I am so glad you found him! I have been worried sick. I am 99.9% sure that is my dog. I will show you some pictures or we can go scan his microchip to prove it. Instead, Thats my friends dog. When can we pick up? So obviously, people will want this dog and lie to get him because he appears to be a potential for profit. That is irritating enough. But then there are all these other people saying if his owners arent found, they will take him. Just like that. No, Id love to meet him and see if his personality would be a good match. Nope, just instant they will take him. Some say he looks so cuddly and their kids would just love him. They dont seem interested in finding out if he is good with kids first though or even asking if he likes cuddling. They dont know his age, health, or if hes neutered. There is just a picture of a dog in a car and a comment that hes a boy and all of a sudden all these people are exclaiming their love and desire to take him home. Just stop it already!!! Look, I know the local high school is the Hemet Bulldogs and I know their fat wrinkly bodies are cute, but you dont know this ones personality. Youre a bunch of damn impulse shoppers completely ignoring the commitment that it takes and that this animal is a life and not a product. If you are so willing to get a dog right now, then go to a shelter, check out a rescue, etc. Meet the dog first. Make sure there is a good match - especially if you have kids or other animals. Maybe you wont get the exact breed you thought you wanted, but so what? There is a very good possibility you will find a dog who exceeds what you thought you wanted personality-wise. Designer shoes and handbags may look pretty, but they arent always practical or the best fit. Fancy doesnt necessarily mean better quality. Get your head out of your superficial butt and realize that there is a great dog who will die because so many people would rather the purebred for looks alone. Those dogs being killed every day in shelters have the potential to be the missing part of your heart and you are throwing that opportunity away because you are too interested in what doesnt really matter much in the end. If you think your kids would love a dog and you are willing to make the commitment, then go out and adopt. Stop being stupid. Also if you find an animal, please be careful. Know that even the most legit story and nice looking person can be a phoney. Check first for a microchip (shelters, vets, etc will scan for one for you at no charge) and if no chip is found, then by all means post online, on posters, in papers, whatever. But dont give too much information. Let the people looking for their animal contact you and offer a description of their companion. Let them tell you the gender and markings. Be sure the animal is going back to the right place. If time passes and no one can rightfully claim him or her, then by all means, accept interest from potential adopters and do your best to make sure they are going to a good place. There are a lot of creeps out there, but if you weed through them, you can also find some really awesome people with huge hearts that will be that animals happily ever after.
