A dozen dead in Paris. 200 dead in an Asian air disaster. 2000 dead in Nigeria. 200,000 dead in Syria. Information I can do absolutely nothing with except become anxious, overwhelmed, and ultimately impotent. Perhaps its better if I didnt know. 100 years ago, I wouldnt have; not, at least, until the news had made its way over oceans, mountains, telegraph poles and through the sieve of interpretation. When I was younger, I raced around the world seeking intensity and meaning. But the only genuine change I have ever produced has always been one foot in front of my face. If I took a swift hammer to the radio, the telly, this idiotic iPhone 6 plus (!), and smashed the outside world to smithereens, my effect on the world would be precisely the same as the moment before. A time is coming when I will de-mediate for good, and you will all have to make do without this ephemeral avatar. But today, o Book Of Faces, I say unto thee: amid the hasty chatter, the violence of certainty, the rapid-fire flurry of conjecture, take a moment to say to yourselves, I know nothing , I understand nothing. And yet I continue to live.
