A fellow Healthy Skeptic asks: Do you know of any organic foods or supplements that help with mild arthritis? (First off, I love the way this question was presented because many diseases can, indeed, be cured with diet.) While the two different types of arthritis are quite different (Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis), they both share a common trait: Inflammation. Anti-Inflammatories, Analgesics, or Steroids are often prescribed to suppress the symptoms of arthritis, but just a few of the side effects include adrenal, liver, and/or kidney damage. There are so many natural Anti-Inflammatories and Immune-Boosters you can include in your diet. Here are just a few: - Cherries (Keep a bag in your freezer) - Omega-3’s (Flax Seed, Chia Seed, Walnuts, Wild Salmon, pastured Eggs) - Vitamin D (Just 15-20 minutes of daily, unfiltered sun exposure should be enough) - Coconut Oil (This is a miracle oil! Use it to cook with; for eggs, chicken, fish, even baked goods. Add to smoothies, or eat a spoonful right out of the jar) - Raw Celery (Can be juiced too) - Garlic (Cook with it, blend it in vegetable juice, swallow raw pieces if you can) Things to AVOID: - Processed Food, specifically: - Sugar (highly inflammatory) - Trans-Fat (fried food) - GMO’s (especially anything conventional/non-organic containing Corn, Soy or Canola) With that being said, there are so many different names and derivatives of Corn (such as dextrose, corn syrup, maltodextrose) and Soy (textured vegetable protein, soy lecithin, vegetable oil). Another name for Canola is Rapeseed Oil. An excellent documentary to help you better understand the pervasiveness of GMO’s, and how they effect our health is “Genetic Roulette: the Gamble of our Lives”. Some supplements to consider: - Fish Oil or other Omega-3 source, such as Krill Oil, Hemp Oil or Flax Oil (I recommend Omega-3’s for EVERYONE) - Vitamin D: I take 5,000 IU’s of a food-based supplement like Garden of Life’s Raw D3 when I don’t get enough sun (again, EVERYONE should optimize their Vitamin D levels) - Schizandra (per my article, “Mother’s Little Helper”) - Resveratrol, Astaxanthin or Quercitin (powerful antioxidants) - Boswelia (an Indian herb) Because the arthritis is mild, the dietary changes should help quite a bit. For occasional pain, try homeopathic Arnica Montana. But if your symptoms worsen, seek advice at a local health food store with the above-mentioned supplements or others. I hope you will soon find relief by making small dietary changes. Food can truly be either poisonous or medicinal. Any tips from anyone else?
