A female Three-toed Sloth photographed two weeks ago by Samantha Dube. Sloths are microbiome jackpots because they move so slowly and their fur contains microscopic grooves that invite microbial residence. A recent article in PLOS ONE suggests that sloths may harbor as many as 28 unknown species of fungi, which appear to have bioactive properties resistant to malarial infection. Research is continuing to determine if the bioactive properties of sloth fungi also provide resistance to some types of cancer as well as to MRSA bacteria.
