A few Sunday nite comments. I dont like to be critical of Chronicle Herald, because I really believe its doing a first rate job for Nova Scotians in this Internet age. However, there needs to be better coverage of political events like nominating conventions. Coverage of the Halifax LIberal nominating convention this weekend was seven or eight lines, saying who won the nomination. Noe reference to anything liked who the other contestant was, or crowd or what was said. And so far I dont see anything about the Liberal nominating convention in Sackville which seems to have been held today. Nor did I see any coverage of Robert Chisholms or Megan Leslies NDP nominations. Nor have I seen any coverage of Conservative nominations. This is all too bad, because in a Parliamentary system it is very important for folks to know who the folks seeking election to Parliament and what they think. 45 years ago, when I was a Herald reporter, i can remember being sent all over the province to cover nominating conventions--I know this aint the 60s--but more attention needs to be paid by all media to this sort of thing. I noted in the Macdonald report yesterday that a lot of former provincial P.C. Tory staffers, very bright ones, are now labouring in Ottawa on behalf of H and Co. Saddens me--because those I used to know, but who now undergone that transition and come back to NSa re no longer the nice PC folks they were, but rather miniature Pierre Polievres--educated int eh mean and nasty tactics of that outfit. Unfortunate. I noted in the news this weekend that the Prime Minister was kind of rude to Vladimir Putin at the G20. I dont care for PUtin nay more than the PM--but being rude and trying to order leaders of another major country around aint diplomacy--serve no useful function, except possible a crass political one--and shouldnt happen. To keep peace in the world, youve got to be a little diplomatic so you can negotiate with leaders of other countries, even when we dont like what they are doing. Disgusting on the part of the PM. Changing the subject a bit, I am concerned somewhat about the concept of naming rights. I understand the reasoning behind it, but Im not sure its the best way to do things. Great Nova Scotians of the past are being forgotten. I note the Ralson Building downtown is being done away with--and with it will go the memory of Layton Ralston, a great Nova Scotia who served our province and country well, as among other things, a great federal cabinet minister during WWII, who eventually quit the King Government on a matter of great principle. In the research Im doing for my book project, I am reminded of the great work of the Late GEorge Nowlan, long time VAlley M.P and Mr. Diefenbakers Finance Minister, who was key to helping N.S. get innovative, fair treatment from Ottawa in the 50s and early 60s. He needs to be remembered. Likewise Allan MacEachen and Elmer MacKay. And there are other non-political types whove been real builders of N.S--from Fred C. Manning and Russell Harrington to J. K. Bell to Dr. W. P. Oliver to Helen Creighton. In naming buildings etc, Lest we forget is as important as it is for Remembrance Day. Enough screed for tonite.
