A few musical thoughts this evening, two of which are holiday-related. 1. Sometimes, without conscious intent, my mind puts familiar songs into unfamiliar contexts. Today it took the lovely and lyrical When Im Thinking About You by the Sundays, removed it from the thoughts of a youngish woman, and planted it in the mind and heart of an older, lonely widow. It changes everything. https://youtube/watch?v=JgfRqXmiimI 2. I wonder how long it will be before one of my favorite Christmas songs, Baby, Its Cold Outside, is banned from the radio. No means No, after all. 3. Winter Wonderland is a holiday song, true, but its also a song about being ready for marriage. Theres all that stuff about the snowman, Parson Brown, and you can do the job when youre in town -- but the culmination of the song is in the line, To face unafraid the plans that weve made. That strikes me as a beautiful image: This is a big, bold, heady step that theyre undertaking, not the sort of thing one should take frivolously, but they are facing it willingly and without fear or reservation. (See? The line is much better than the explanation.) Im pretty sure that last one isnt an original thought of mine, but I dont remember where I heard it. Lydia McGrew, perhaps?
