A few takeaways on yesterdays results: Disappointed with the Governors race, but Charlie Baker gets props for handling his acceptance with grace and courtesy, two qualities that will serve him well in dealing with a Democrat-dominated Legislature. Maura Healey for Attorney General is the rock star of this campaign, starting with no base, no recognition, and no money, but with Mike Firestone at the helm of her campaign, beat Warren Tolman for Attorney General and then her opponent yesterday, both handily. She has a bright future as our next AG. Seth Moulton for Congress, in a similar way, beat our incumbent Congressman John Tierney, and then yesterday did the same with Richard Tisei. BTW, Tisei also was classy, generous and a real professional at a time when conceding defeat is so very hard (Winning is more fun than losing). Props to him as well. Eileen Duff, our fabulous Governors Councilor, worked so hard campaigning, just as she does everything else she does - including in her first term with that body, and was rewarded with strong results throughout her huge district, bigger even than the Congress District. Jerry Parisella, our Beverly State Rep, easily beat his opponent, a perennial candiate (12 races in 12 years), who stooped to a new low by attaching his name to false, scurrilous charges that Jerry has not represented veterans well. As a veteran himself, this individual should be ashamed of himself for doing this, and clearly had no visible support yesterday at the various polling places, even by those single-issue voters (Common Core, Brimbal Avenue, the City Hall Regulars) who were nowhere to be seen yesterday. While Jerry will continue his good work on our behalf and especially on behalf of his fellow veterans, this individual is Im sure already planning a run for some elective office in the City election next November (which he will lose, also, making it 13 for 13) - Do us all a favor and give it up. And finally the ballot questions. While the influence of outside money and super PACs and dark dollars from wherever was never more evident than with the blizzard of commercials for everyone on both sides, they were more easily ignored and may not have actually affected any of our races here, its hard to deny their effect on the ballot questions, particularly the bottle bill and the casino votes - the ability of outside interests to outspend the other sides of those questions was clear in the lopsided results, something which does not bode well for any clear understanding of the difficult to understand issues that are presented where a Yes vote means No and a No vote means Yes.
