A few thoughts tonight for what theyre worth. With the - TopicsExpress

A few thoughts tonight for what theyre worth. With the celebration of the recent successes of marriage equality, theres something missing from it all that I want to put out there. Its chilling to think that 16 years ago tonight in rural Wyoming, a kid my own age then, was brutally beaten and tied to a fence, hanging like an October scarecrow. Left to die. Attacked because he was an easy target: a gay, well-dressed, introverted young man in a problematic small town drug culture. What we saw afterward was action: by communities, by legislators, by families, by police, by governments. In contrast, after all our efforts, by both gay and straight allies, what we saw today was no action from the highest court in our country. No comment. Nothing. If our federal judges are indeed protecting and enforcing our constitution correctly, I would have wanted to hear them validate it, even if the cases werent going to be heard based on the unanimity of all the federal and appeals courts. Instead, today, we got radio silence. Silence on the end of a phone call many of us have waited and fought so long and so hard to hear. Tonight we should be celebrating with our families, our advocates, our representatives and community organizers. Tonight we should be thanking our local and state judges for recognizing inequality and bigotry, and the need for all families to be treated equally under the law. They did their job. Our US Supreme Court? Not so much.
