A few weeks back, there was an enormous amount of mitred parakeets in the Westchester area of Miami- at SW 84th Avenue and 10th Street, just after dawn. Altogether, there were at least 500 birds, maybe quite a bit more. The noise was incredible. Several flocks would merge and split, in some impressive maneuvers. This continued for the 45 minutes or so when I was there. it seemed when I first saw the birds (barely light, no video) they were mostly in one spread out group, literally covering the sky. Later, when I took the videos, there were about 4 or 5 distinct groups- each with easily 150+ birds, meshing together and splitting. A few groups were so tightly packed that they were almost touching. Possibly the best single wildlife spectacle Ive seen in Miami. As I was leaving, the groups looked like they were further dividing into smaller groups. One thing I wonder, is this the same huge flock of mitred parakeets that frequent the Dadeland/Baptist Hospital area?
