A few years ago I saw a television program about an 800 pound man who needed one of his walls literally cut-out in order to remove him from his home. What the rescuers found was remarkable: Although this man ate more than 10,000 calories a day, (more than what a man his height should consume in a full week) he was actually starving to death. Out of all the calories he took in, nothing he ate provided even enough nutritional value to keep his heart beating. They were all empty calories. I use this situation as a metaphor for my deep thought of the day. Too many of us live empty calorie lives. We fill our hours and our days with useless niblets that add absolutely nothing to our health or our well-being. We have been spoon-fed that cynicism, anger, and a quick wit--coupled with a loud mouth are what make us likable people. But like that greasy double cheese burger, that negativity in its many forms is only killing us slowly. Unfortunately, like that salty side of french fries...we only want it super-sized. I know this because, until relatively recently, I was a cynic too. My whole life I highlighted negatives...and as long as I pitched my b**** the right way, people thought it was funny. What I found out the hard way is: that to focus on the negatives, no matter how hilarious it can be made to sound, drains the spirit. A person can assess their life situation and see the good in it, and locate what things they need to change about the bad...or they can remain mired in their own personal hell that goes nowhere but downward. We can continue to live empty calorie lives that sap us one bite at a time, or we can digest only things that nourish us, give us strength, give us energy and vitality enough to really LIVE.
