A fire at the Vernon landfill was threatening a nearby neighbourhood Monday evening. The blaze apparently started in wood debris and soon spread over the crest of a hill to come close to Kalview Trailer Park, which overlooks Kalamalka Lake. Worried residents watched the firefight from their yards as a helicopter ferried water from the nearby lake. A Ministry of Forests bomber also dumped loads of fire retardent. Spectators lined the highway and side roads. On the ground, Coldstream and Vernon firefighters attacked the blaze both from the dump and from Department of National Defence lands at the Vernon Army Cadet Camp, which separate the mobile home park from the landfill.
