A former Chief Justice hopes that the Government will consider a proposal for the Syariah Court, currently under the respective state governments, to be placed under the Federal Government. Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad said should this be done, the process of resolving cases would be easier, especially those related to syariah and civil laws. “I’m not saying that it has to be implemented. It is just a policy,” he said after the Penang Syariah Lawyers Convention here yesterday. “If the Syariah Court remains under the state government, its power of jurisdiction is very limited and small,” said Abdul Hamid. “Many cases cannot be solved because of this problem.” Abdul Hamid also suggested that the hearing of civil cases be jointly presided by a civil court judge and a syariah judge to obtain the right and precise judgment. — Bernama
