A friend advised me to convey my regrets and not an aplogy - for those who do not know the subtle difference: Apology is an admission error, mistake, wrongful act asking for pardon/forgiveness of having injured, insulted, harmed, and/or failed someone accompanied by an expression of regret. Regret is feeling sorry, disappointed, or distress about something; is to mourn the loss or death of. No admission of wrong doing or request of forgiveness is involved.
