A friend asked that I let her know when Id finished this list, and while its not final (Im still debating Dracula--I might do Frankenstein or Jekyll and Hyde instead--it is pretty much done otherwise. Anyway, this is the reading list for my Great Books (1700-present) for next semester. The theme is Literature of the Macabre, and before you start howling about why isnt your favorite book on there instead of that damned Japanese thing, only a certain percentage of the books taught can have been written in English, which makes this list particularly difficult. Also, I dispensed with poetry--largely because I just cant force myself to wade through Porphyrias Lover one more time, and I really dont want to do more Poe than Usher--and chose to do film instead of theatre, mostly because around these parts, its just more relevant. Besides, I sometimes think Im the only one whos actually seen Trollhunter, one of the scariest comedies in the history of film--besides Justine Bieber, that is. Nuff said, heres the list:
