A friend has been trying to take me to lunch for a couple of weeks. Today, he and I (and his two wonderful grand kids) met up at his favorite place: cafe cruz. He and I occupy very different places in the socio-economic ecosystem. Its very hard for me to let people buy my meals, especially hard when the meals are expensive. Id already talked to myself about accepting with Grace and giving him the opportunity to do something that really meant a lot to him. So I sat and enjoyed my meal and the company of a man I love like a brother who couldnt be any less like me if we tried :) When the meal was over, the host came by our table and I prepared to not feel awkward when the check came and she stopped and smiled at me and said I just want you to know that [the owners] have paid for your meal, they said your sermon yesterday was wonderful and theyd like to do this for you I was in shock. A good shock, but shock. No one had ever picked up my tab for me. Ive seen mom do it for soldiers, Ive done it for friends or families Ive seen struggling, but not for me. I was so genuinely grateful and deeply moved that I went in to find them and thank them. When I came back my friend had a giant grin on his face and said: Well, I guess I still owe you a meal! :)
