A friend let me borrow both BDPs Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip Hop and Chunky As Large and in Charge at around the same time. While I sat playing =avatar deep into early the morning hours, Im a little embarrassed now to say that I listened to both about equally. Fortunately, while little of Arsenio Halls alter ego remains in my brain, the same cant be said of BDP. After Scott La Rocks death, KRS-One went a bit off the rails, but if its gonna happen, calling yourself the Teacha and trying to raise awareness of black history and culture is one of the better outcomes. The thing was, due to some similarly-minded teachers in my schools growing up, I already knew a lot of the facts presented in this song. It was like KRS consulted with Ms. Juanita Harris, 5th Grade, before hitting the booth. In the same vein, he also presents a few...historical exaggerations, which is similar to some of the substitute teachers and guest speakers wed get from time to time, like the one who tried to convince us that the earth was a giant ovum on a menstrual cycle, and thats why theres a major hurricane every 28 days. I love this song, not only for the kazoo intro and the fact that KRS finds a rhyme for Theodosius, but also because hes absolutely right. Dont take any one source as gospel truth, not even him. Dont stop digging, question everything, keep learning.
