A friend of mine came over last night for a bowl of chili with a side order of good conversation, and neither one of us had a definitive perspective on whether its okay to sometimes lie (if you can save someones life by lying, for example), or if its our individual responsibility to always stick to our values no matter what. But we also value human life, so does that mean we need to prioritize our values and only lie if it serves a higher purpose (like lying to save a life?) The more I think about it, the more Im tempted to say that if we have made a vow to always be honest in all matters, then our job is to always be honest in all matters, period. Lets not concern ourselves with making exceptions, excuses, or sliding down a slippery slope of when its okay to break our vows and when it isnt.. ya know? An ancient saying claims theres no right way to do a wrong thing. What do you think? Is it ever okay to lie? Does that mean its sometimes okay to do other things we would otherwise claim were against? How far do we take this? Some food for thought (sorry, the chili is all gone) :)
