A friend of my son Chris asked him why does your mom and brother - TopicsExpress

A friend of my son Chris asked him why does your mom and brother like chickens so much? He wasnt being mean or anything, about it, just wanted to know. It is kind of hard to explain to non-chicken people, but Ill try my best. (I have this kid as a friend on here too.) Well lets see. My mom always told me that her mother loved chickens. Since Grandma died four years before I was born, I have always felt that I was connected to her somehow. My ex brother in law Tim used to run an auction house and once I got a box of junk that happened to have an antique pie bird in it shaped like a chicken. I won this box of junk for $2. So that started me on collecting glass and ceramic ones, and things with them on it. My first pet was a quail and I liked him so much, I wanted a chicken. I remember wanting chicks when I was little, but they were hard to find at stores in Vinita and Bernice at the time. (And Dad surprisingly was going to let me have one. He was always against pets.) Anyway I had a pet rooster and he was so attached to me, nobody else would get near him. Then before Collen was born, Richard had a friend named Ernie Titsworth who raised fancy breeds like BB Reds. I had silkies and even one hen who hatched a baby out...he bought me some of Ernies birds and they were neat. Bottom line, I had a lot of stress in my life back then, and I would take a lawn chair outside and just watch them, scratching, and minding their own business and before long I was feeling relaxed and happy. They are funny, beautiful, and fascinating. They really are about as complex as a dog. They require about the same level of care. I think they are pretty to look at and have personalities too. Collen for some reason loves chickens too and one day when he was bored, he thought it would be fun to try to hatch chicks so we put several eggs in the incubator. The second Dactyl hatched, he was in total love with her. All the others previously were half buff Orpington and half Rhode Island Red, but she was solid black and she is his baby. Technically I dont own ANY chickens, Collen says they are all his. So they give us a lot of enjoyment. Oh and you never want another egg from a grocery store after eating an egg from a home raised hen who is allowed to forage on bugs and grass. My yard has NO ticks, or spiders or anything else and I can grow pretty flowers with the poop. I just turn the chickens loose in a potential flower or garden bed and let them do the raking and fertilizing. So, hope that explains it.
