A friend posted this song on his FB page... wake up song for my morning... Like many songs that we listen to as we go through life, hearing them later awakens memories. The first band I played in had a singer that loved CCR. We played every song they came out with back then. I liked them too, but not quite that much... I was 17... going on 18 when they held the lottery for who got drafted to serve in the US armed forces. Each year they drafted boys based on their birth year then birthday... All 365 days went in the hat... equal opportunity to kill or be killed. My birthday May 29, was drawn as # 80. They drafted up to # 165 that year. I have a few memories from those days that run pretty deep. Out of curiosity I checked casualties as I listened to the song... Well, these arent those wounded in some way... these are the human beings who died. Who knows how many people were injured or became sick because of the war. South Vietnam - approximately 300,000 soldiers dead, up to 3,000,000 civilians. North Vietnam + Viet Cong - approximately 1,100,000 soldiers dead, up to 2,000,000 civilians Cambodia - 200,000 or more civilians dead United States - 58,220 dead Laos - approximately 30,000 dead South Korea - 5,099 dead Peoples Republic of China - 1,446 dead Thailand - 1,351 dead Australia - 521 dead New Zealand - 37 dead Soviet Union - 16 dead. The number of those injured? Millions... burned, maimed, bodies broken. Agent Orange showed up in the statistics I looked at this morning as I listened to the song... they estimate 500,000 children born with birth defects... 3,000,000 with health issues because of their exposure. I didnt find numbers for US personnel. This war... I didnt believe in it when they pulled my birth date. I was about 18 years old when I first realized the US government lied to us on a regular basis. I am a lot older now and they havent stopped lying... And we are still sending boys... and now girls to fight and die for the great ole USA. Peace and Love... maybe we will know what that is some day...
