A further Letter to my children school in Felpham. It is not my - TopicsExpress

A further Letter to my children school in Felpham. It is not my intention to up set anyone but this truth has to be told and realise and I would not be true to myself if I were to just except this ridiculous situation of our education system. I am now 57 years old and I started my first business when I was 21 and have had many varying companies including a restaurant, property development, music management and publishing. I now have a furniture company where I design furniture where I have it made it Lithuania and Romania. Recently I have also become an author of 4 books. I have also worked for a worldwide charity for 4 years in my early 30’s, spending much time in India, Russia and Eastern Europe. Throughout my business career I have found that collaboration is the art of good management, taking into consideration the needs of your staff and in particular your customers and your ability to respond to their needs. The way I look at the school is in a similar way as the children and parents are the customers of the school and the school is funded by the taxes which are paid by the parents. So, the school is something which shouldn’t stand apart from the community but, should be the centre of the community. One of the most amazing qualities of being a dyslexic which I have come to realise during my life is the ability to see things as a whole and by doing that, you can see very clearly what needs to be done to improve every situation. I am sure you are aware out of the 17 greatest minds in the world, 11 of them were dyslexics. We live in a world which is changing increasingly quickly and most of the large businesses and corporations now employ dyslexics as a matter of principle for the reasons I have mentioned above. My feeling is that the school needs to collaborate with the parents and children in a more open and collaborative way to make schools better equipped and more inviting for both teachers , children and parents. I am incredibly passionate about all aspects of life and the only real communication with the school since my son started in September is to be rung by a teacher on my mobile while I am at work and told that he has a detention on a particular afternoon after school. My son has made me aware that he has got top marks in his IT lesson and recently drew an amazing leave in art he has also told me his spelling has improved in English and he was praised for doing well in a history test. I am incredibly proud of my son as he is a very kind and considerate boy and most of his friends look up to him for help and advice. But, I find it incredible that as customers of the school and considering my son spends 7 hours a day, that there is very little or no communication with the parents ie your customers which I feel is a real shame as things could be so much better for the teachers, children and parents if there was much more open collaboration. I am sure it can’t be easy running a school which is governed by the government and many of your decisions are taken out of your hands. But, I really feel that if our education system is going to improve and thrive in this modern era then it also needs to be accountable to its customers ie the parents and the children and so, I feel that the parents and children need to have far more collaboration with the teachers in creating a far better and more manageable environment for our children to grow and that is why I wrote my first email and included a timetable which is far more cohesive, logical and manageable than a timetable which is over 2 weeks. I also feel that it’s a shame that your email reply is very defensive rather than open and willing to discuss the points I have put forward. Last night after reading your email, I found it incredibly hard to sleep as my feelings are driven by my heart and I feel that it is a shame that you’re not prepared to collaborate with me considering I have 2 children at your school. I had an idea and that is perhaps it would be a great idea to get together 7 of your dyslexic children and ask them to come up with ideas to improve the school as the school has to be about the children, the parents and the teachers working together to create an even better learning experience for everyone concerned. I really don’t want you to feel that I am attacking the school or judging you as individuals my only desire is to improve the situation for everyone concerned and of course I understand you have 1300 children and parents to deal with and I would like to feel that you take my 2 emails as a very positive way of wanting to help create an even better environment for children, parents and teachers. I’d also like to say that I am very pleased to hear from Louis that he is enjoying the school and his work is improving considering that he has been through a very difficult time and also has recently learnt that he has dyslexia which of course he will realise in time is a significant advantage.
