A girl at the grocery store stopped me just now. I was standing in - TopicsExpress

A girl at the grocery store stopped me just now. I was standing in the frozen food aisle, absently examining the various flavors of pint sized ice creams. I didnt look particularly sad or lonely or lost or found for that matter, just me standing there in my decades old Harvard t-shirt and simple black skirt. Excuse me? Im really sorry, I dont mean to be a bother she asked, slightly crouched as if to lessen the supposed intrusion. She was a very beautiful girl, college aged with a sincere friendliness to her demeanor. I just wanted to ask, and Im sorry again if this is a bother but...do you go to church at all? I was at a complete loss for two solid seconds. Of all the things she could have said, holding a half gallon of Denali Moose Tracks ice cream in her hand, this question had definitely not been on my radar. No I blurted, almost offensively. I smiled quickly and continued No I dont You dont like it? She asked, straightening up slightly but still angled a bit away as if to show she was ready to be dismissed any second. No, it isnt that I explained. I just have my own relationship with God and Ive never found a religion that quite encompasses my beliefs wholly. She nodded understandingly and then asked, Do you read the bible? I smiled and told her I did not. She went on to invite me to her bible study group that meets on Sunday afternoons downtown. I thanked her sincerely for the invitation and told her about my close friend who frequently invites me to her church events (truth). She laughed and said Oh she tries to get you to go too? I smiled and laughed as well and we closed the conversation and exchanged warm smiles. It was such a strange experience for me. I was genuinely grateful to her for the invitation but I wonder what it was that prompted her to speak up. Did she sense something deeper in me than I sense myself? Maybe she just felt comfortable reaching out to another female, maybe she had a personal quota to fill. It was a nice experience. Bizarre and completely out of the ordinary.
