A global loss???????? - I just heard you all (on Michael Smerconishs show) lamenting the MH 370 tragedy as a global loss, and just about fell out of my seat. The entire media apparatus in this country seems fixated on the Malaysian flight MH 370, and the 239 lost souls who have undoubtedly perished. I cannot imagine the anxiety and sadness which grips their families and friends, and I do hope that they can find peace as the world focuses attention on this tragedy. However, I am struck by some other statistics, beyond the 239 passengers whose plight now occupies the airtime, and human/financial resources of at least 26 nations, and untold interested parties who find this topic of utmost importance. It is truly exploitative and an exaggeration to lament this tragedy as a global loss. There are 7.1 BILLION people inhabiting the earth, yet 239 of them have grabbed our attention for more than 15 days. Here are some global losses, in my view. 30,000 children around the world died TODAY from preventable diseases, and more than 11 million will have died by the end of the year. Which cable network is speaking for them? Millions of young girls in developing countries will be unable to participate in the education process, simply because of the lack of hygiene materials and secure toilet facilities (they dont go to school when they are having their periods). Land mines continue to litter the earth, subjecting countless folks to injury and death. In the USA, more than 2,000 people will die TODAY from heart disease, and about 30 will die TODAY from gun violence. Will you, Wolf Blitzer, or Diane Sawyer or Megyn Kelly have a special on this? I doubt it. There will be 4.5 million people flying on airplanes TODAY, on approximately 93,000 flights out of 9,000 different airports, but the worldwide coverage and resources will focus laser-like attention to the 239. Have I lost perspective on the importance of the 239 versus all of the other things confronting this country and/or the 7.1 billion??? Statements about a global loss with respect to the victims of MH 370 are just truly insensitive when compared to the plight of the folks who continue to be assaulted daily by societies around the world. Just today, it has been announced that 4.5 million dollars has been allocated to technical assistance for Malaysia THROUGH THE FIRST WEEK IN APRIL. At the current rate, the USA will have spent a minimum of 54 million dollars on this tragedy within a year. How many USA citizens could have been helped with this money??? Where are the priorities, and what is the true meaning of global loss???? Lets not get it twisted and throw around catchy phrases like global loss, when, in fact, the world is a lot more complex than your show made it sound. Where are your journalistic skills? Do you have FACTS? Please stand down until you do. Daily updates will do fine until you have something, beyond breathless speculation, to report.
