A good laugh from a comment, not exactly sympathizing with the IRS on its claim that we will have the worst tax filing season ever next year and why its not their fault. (See story two posts down.) - - - - - Read their instructions and then purposefully dont follow everything they ask you to do to make life easier for them. File on paper. Dont file early. If your return doesnt include a lot of forms, use the software to generate the right numbers but copy it over by hand and put a couple of numbers on the wrong lines while keeping the tax liability, withholding and estimated payments plus the amount you owe correct. Or omit a schedule or a supporting form. Or transpose a dependents SSN. The idea is to generate an error notice that doesnt effect the tax bill because such notices cost them money to issue and to clear. If you owe $123 make the check out for $132 so they have to generate an error notice plus a $9 refund via a paper check. If you happen to receive a notice with a small penalty and some interest, pay any taxes and the interest immediately but write a begging letter asking the penalty be abated for reasonable cause and relay some some long but plausible sob story. They have to respond to such letters and generate a second notice. Drown them in paperwork that eats up their admin time and resources but which generates no additional revenue for them.
