A great Goan passes away: Yesterday we lost Indias finest cartoonist R. K.Laxman, and today Goa lost a beloved and illustrious son, one of the greatest Goan intellectuals of modern times – Dr. Jose Pereira of Curtorim. Despite his failing health, he continued to visit Goa and engage in all that he was passionate about till the very end. Historian, Sanskrit scholar, researcher, linguist, writer, painter, Dr. Pereira was a multi-talented personality. Consider this: B.A. (Hons.) in Sanskrit, degree from the J.J. School of Art, a Ph. D. in Ancient Indian History and Culture, a Research Associate in History of Indian Art at the American Academy of Benares, in Varanasi, adjunct Professor of East and West Cultural Relations at the Instituto Superior de Estudos Ultramarinos in Lisbon, Portugal, and finally, Professor of Theology at Fordham University, New York. Not to mention the numerous books, highly creative paintings, and well researched articles on Goan culture, mandos, language, and the history of art and architecture. I never had the privilege of meeting Dr. Jose Pereira personally, but Ive met him on several occasions through his writings – whilst researching material on the background of the Goan mando for my blog posts. May the soul of this great Goan rest in peace.
