A great date with my honey, Paula Israel in SF today. In mid-afternoon, we did several galleries on the 4th floor of 49 Geary--each of the worth a visit, particularly for lovers of great photography including Ansel Adams. The real jewel was the Vivian Maier Out of the Shadows exhibit. She was a nanny, mostly in Chicago from the 1930s into the early 60s. When she died, thousands of her black & white photos and undeveloped film was discovered in her attic. Unknown in her life, her genius is now being recognized. Most of her photos was of everyday people. Each tells a story, very often a mysterious or unresolved shot. The exhibit, unfortunately, closed today. But there is a movie out about her. After a brief and relatively painless shopping spree, Paula and I went to one of our old favorites: Tadich Grill, the oldest restaurant in SF, on the second block of California Street. It is a very Old World kind of place. The menu is mostly seafood and I dont think it has changed since I first went there in 1978. Paula and I sat at the bar and got great service from a waiter who may have been there when I was first there. We had a great day. Tomorrow, I review the Table of Contents revisions from Porter Gale. And remember Robert Scobles advice at critical moments in the last book. Onward! vivianmaier/
