A great loss not only for Alberta, but also for the country. Yes, she made some significant errors in judgment; and, yes, I disagreed with certain of her policies (in particular, the civil forfeiture legislation passed by her government and her antagonistic treatment of public sector unions). Nevertheless, she was the only relatively progressive politician with any plausible hope of occupying the office of premier and, just as important, she had a vision for the leadership role Alberta could and should play in confederation. At a time when the federal government, for reasons of political ideology, consistently refuses to play its historical role as national unifier, such leadership must, of necessity, emerge from the provinces. I fear we shall now witness a return to the little Alberta mentality of past premiers who look East and reflexively see foes rather than potential partners and allies. Mayor Nenshi, its time to step up.
