A group of former residents, descendants, and other interested people has launched the Blue Ridge Heritage Project. They are looking for people who might be interested in joining their effort: The primary goal of the Blue Ridge Project is to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by the former residents of the mountains that now comprise Shenandoah National Park. A memorial site will be created in each of the eight counties where land was acquired for the Park. Displays at these locations will help tell the stories of the people of the mountains and their lives, giving visitors to the area a greater understanding of and appreciation for the cultural history of the Park region before the coming of the park. A driving “trail” will connect these eight memorials with some of the schools, churches, mills and other sites that were important to the people living in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Blue Ridge Heritage Project is looking for former residents of the Park, their descendants, and other interested people to help define and establish this project. At this time there are active groups in Madison, Greene, and Rappahannock Counties, and we are seeking people to help promote the project in Page, Warren, Augusta, Rockingham, and Albemarle Counties. If you are interested in learning more about the project you can go to “Blue Ridge Heritage Project” page on Facebook. To help with the planning and development of the project, please contact Bill Henry at OnaRock01@yahoo or call 434-985-7905.
