A group of researchers using the MAGIC telescope and the European VLBI Network have detected flashes of gamma rays due to the effect of a supermassive black hole in a nearby galaxy. The short duration of the emissions means that the region from which they are being released is smaller than the black holes event horizon. The combination of gamma ray observations and radio interferometry allowed for a significant increase in resolution that helps provide a clearer picture of the black holes jets.
