A group of youngsters in Grassmoor have been navigating their way around their village as part of an urban orienteering competition. The competition was organised by Grassmoor Youth Club and 16 young people took part. They split into smaller groups who then took to the streets to find 15 different markers across the village. Each group had to beat the clock and put into use map reading and route solving skills. After the race, which took place on Friday, May 31, there was a chance for the youngsters to try out soft archery. Grassmoor Youth Club is open to all youngsters between the ages of 7 and 11, meeting once a month at Grassmoor Community Centre, on New Street. The youth club is run by officers from Holmewood, Grassmoor, Calow and Arkwright Safer Neighbourhood policing team and first launched in September 2011. PCSO James Land works closely with the club. He said: “During the orienteering a number of residents asked us what we were doing so we had the chance to explain raise the profile of the club and about what is on offer to local young people. “The youth club is there to provide local youngsters with a place they can go to relax, talk, try new activities and meet new people. Come along and see what we do, from cooking to art, games or maybe a competition; we always do our best to make sure there is something fun and new to do.” The next sessions will take place between 6:30pm and 8pm on Friday, June 28, Friday, July 26 and Friday, August 23. Some of the activities set to take place will include a challenge trail, outdoor activities in the park and a village picture quiz.
