A half-century ago, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. eloquently expressed in unforgettable words a dream he envisioned for equality and freedom that continues to inspire and motivate lovers of freedom today both here in America and around the world. The 1963 March on Washington was a pivotal event in our nation’s civil rights struggle. Dr. King’s words on that memorable day are an integral part of American history and have been captured in historical texts, stone monuments and the hearts of all those who pursue the goals of equality, harmony and justice for all. Here in Queens, where I once had the privilege of meeting Dr. King, I call on our houses of worship, colleges, public facilities and all those who can to participate to "Let Freedom Ring" by joining in a nationwide bell-ringing that will be held at 3 p.m. today to commemorate Dr. King’s "I Have a Dream" speech. I would also recommend that you attend a special program commemorating the March on Washington that will be held today at 1 p.m. in the auditorium of the Central Library at 89-11 Merrick Boulevard in Jamaica. The event will include remarks from 1960s Queens College Civil Rights activist Mark Levy, the screening of footage from the film "Eyes on the Prize," the performance of civil rights songs and shared perspectives from members of the audience.
