A half dozen intrepid explorers walked a narrow forest trail on Madre Selva Preserve in Amazonian Peru, each apparenly stepping over a patch of leaves on the trail. They walked a few hundres yers beyond then tured and retraced their steps. As the neared the bit of leaf cover the head of a small snake was seen protruding from beneth the leaves. Carefully collecting the snake they brought with them to the station the only Pygmy Black Coral Snake, Leptomicrurus scutiventris,we have yet seen there. Take note, this is just one of the many coral snakes on which the familiar red to yellow, red to black ditty has no meaning whatever!
