A heads up. In case anyone is unaware, Jonathon Edwards is now on the board of directors at Phoenix Rising. While there are pluses to this, quite a few, its creating disquiet amongst quite a few advocates. I could say more, but a lot of what I am reading is in confidence. Its also becoming clear he is trying to sort out some of the cultural issues on PR. While some of that is overdue, there are questions about where this might lead. The biggest danger is for the PR community to shift to even more pro-establishment views, which makes members even more vulnerable to orthodoxy. On the other hand we could use a shift to a more rational and sceptical view of the science. We are seeing some of this play out in attitudes to the P2P and IOM. These organizations are currently being used to railroad medical science. There is some discretion from panel members, some of whom (on the IOM panel anyway) are not naive about the issues. It is less clear with the P2P, which looks like becoming an orthodoxical rubber stamp. Indeed more and more of this is happening within the evidence based medicine movement, which is giving ground to evidence based management, which is driven in part by both the biopsychosocial school and economic ideology.
