A holistic capacity development system for the MPA managers, addressing their knowledge, skills and values, is key to developing approaches for sustainable and effective management of coastal and marine biodiversity. In this context, GIZ and Wildlife Institute of India has partnered to offer training courses on coastal and marine biodiversity” for the field-level and senior forest officers, and decision-makers. The course uses a competence-based curriculum, developed by a team of multi-sector experts and trainers n from biodiversity, forest, marine biology, media, fisheries and capacity development fields. The course uses participatory training methods to ensure effective content delivery. The course has has a special focus on field-based activities, especially using SCUBA diving and other field-based methods for under-water and coastal biodiversity assessment and monitoring surveys. The course is intended to enable the participants to have a sound understanding of the concepts and issues related to coastal and marine biodiversity and related protected areas management, ecological and socio-political context, conservation approaches and legal-policy framework between terrestrial and coastal marine protected areas. The course will also enable the participants to enhance their skills towards conducting assessment and monitoring of coastal and marine habitats and species, preparing field reports and developing – under supervision – operational plans for MPAs based on management effectiveness guidelines.
